A: Event management and marketing course
The idea of an event is not new. From the ancient Olympic Games to modern day concerts, there are often events that are established with certain purposes in mind. It is these purposes that are the focus of the class. The study of event management and marketing allows students to take part in many different types of events. These events range from one-time events to events that are designed to be a large part of a school’s curriculum.
A: One time event vs. event series
One time events are what most people think of when they hear the word “event”. A one time event has a specific date, place and time for its occurrence. A one time event can be as simple as a concert or as complex as a wedding. For the purpose of this paper, a one time event is a singular occurrence with a beginning and an end. These types of events are often planned by those who will benefit from the event. An example of a one time event is a band that has signed a contract to perform at a local venue for one night only. In order for the band to earn money from the performance, as well as create a larger fan base, they will need to promote the event through traditional methods such as flyers, advertisements or even word of mouth. This type of promotion is important since the band is hoping for a large crowd at their show. The more people that attend, the more money they will be able to make from ticket sales and merchandising. Since a one time event occurs only once, no matter how successful it was, it can never be repeated with the same results. A one time event may have several purposes but it only fulfills one purpose at a time. In this case, the purpose is to gain exposure for the band and to bring in revenue.
Event series however, are events that last more than one night and therefore require more planning on the part of those who organize them. An example of an event series is a concert series put on by a local venue. The first night’s concert may feature a popular band and sell out quickly while the second and third nights may feature lesser known bands and be less successful. If the venue is able to pay for itself and still make some money on these performances, then they will likely continue to hold shows on these nights, assuming that they can find suitable acts to fill them with. This is where some marketing strategies come into play as musicians will need to know which venues work best for which kinds of performances and vice versa. An event series can also be used as a way to create an interest in something else entirely. For instance, if an area needs to raise funds for something like a playground or community park, they could hold an annual festival and charge admission to the festival and donate all proceeds to their cause. Depending on how much money is needed, they could hold the festival more than once each year and invite different groups of vendors each time. This type of event series would be very similar to an ongoing event series such as the circus or the rodeo, which both tend to occur several times each year in many communities.
Event series are much more complex than one time events because they take place over longer periods of time and often involve more people in their organization. One time events are often planned by those who will benefit from them while event series are planned by those who want to benefit others or raise money for something or someone.
