I have always loved working from home. I find it very liberating, especially if you work from home because you enjoy what you are doing, have flexibility to work when you want, are not subject to the usual office politics, and feel that your boss is more your friend than your manager.

I found the following strategies to be extremely helpful.

B: Stress relief strategies

1) Take regular breaks. My boss was kind enough to give me a regular lunch break each day. Most companies do not allow this, but I usually go out for lunch. Anything else would not give me enough time to relax, read or write. It is important for me to make sure that I am not working all day. I will also take short breaks during the day-time. Some people like to take these after they complete a large project or at the end of the day. Whatever works best for you is fine as long as you do it regularly.

2) Make sure that you schedule time into your day for relaxation. This could be anything from watching TV to playing games on your computer. If you don’t give yourself this time, you will go crazy.

3) Plan ahead so that you can avoid disruptions. People will always come up to you and ask you questions or stop you in the hall for a conversation. The best way to handle this is to either ignore them until they go away or to say something like “not now” or simply “no”. You can then deal with them later if you really must. If you cannot avoid them completely, then just stay focused on what you were doing before they came by and don’t let it derail you. I usually try to write down their question and put it in a folder for later reference if necessary. If the conversation lasts longer than a few minutes, I simply tell them that I am busy right now and ask them if they can come back later. I am lucky in that my boss is very understanding of my need to get my work done without interruption and he supports my need for solitude while working from home.

4) Write down a list of things that help you relax and then add things to this list as new ideas strike you. These can include things such as getting a massage, going out for a walk, reading a book, going shopping, etc. Make sure to check this list often so that you can reward yourself whenever you reach a goal or accomplish something important at work or in your personal life. It’s a good idea to have a notebook where you can write down your thoughts, ideas and things that inspire you so that you have something fun to read over when you need a break from your work. It’s also important to get enough sleep so that your mind can be clear and sharp when you get up in the morning. If you get less than seven hours of sleep per night, it will make your job much harder and make you more susceptible to mistakes and distractions during the day. It may also make it more difficult for you to work effectively when you get up in the morning and feel refreshed and ready to start work for the day.

5) Finally, remember that there is nothing wrong with taking time off! You deserve it! So don't forget to plan some fun times into your schedule when possible!
